Fiona Bayles, Architect DPLG and Founder of Bayles Design
My name is Fiona Bayles, I founded Bayles Design in 2020 with the goal of making interior design healthier. Prior to moving to Australia with my husband and one child at the time, I studied at Ecole Nationale Superieure d’Architecture de Paris La Villette (ENSAPLV), earning a Master of Architecture Degree.
My passion for architecture ignited during my studies in Paris. I had spent nearly 15 years honing this craft in various locations such as France, USA and now Australia. Throughout my career, I seamlessly transitioned to incorporate interior design into my repertoire, further showcasing my versatility and expertise in creating flowing residential and commercial projects. My journey has been one of continuous growth and adaptation, allowing me to bring a unique perspective to each project I undertake.
A new adventure started when we tried to have a second child. A surprising discovery unfolded when we realized that our home had been infested with black mold. Looking into things further, we became aware with the risks associated with the solar inverter on our bedroom wall. We soon discovered the catastrophic consequences of these exposures on our health, coinciding with four heartbreaking miscarriages. Each loss took a toll on both my physical and emotional well-being. Amidst this personal struggle, this painful and transformative experience inspired us to delve into the world of healthy interior design. My husband Richard, who was at the time a PhD working in health research, retrained to become a building biologist and I became determined to create a safe, nurturing environment not only for my family but for others as well.
The furniture, paint and finishes we choose for our homes and offices, can contain harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde, flame retardants and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These chemicals can off-gas into our surroundings, compromising indoor air quality and posing health risks such as: Asthma, headaches, eye, nose & throat irritation, nausea, dizziness, skin rashes, damage to liver (just to name a few).
Today, Richard - who run Bayles Building Biology - and I, work together to inform and help our clients opt for non-toxic materials and reduce indoor pollution.
We partner with trustworthy manufacturers who share our dedication to sustainability and health, providing you with a wide range of stylish options that adhere to our stringent demands and ensuring that you and your loved ones can enjoy a space with minimal harmful emissions.
